The Vellora Method Facial: More Than a Facial Massage

Mata Wellbeing | The Vellora Method Facial Massage

The Vellora Method is an approach to facial massage that combines facial sculpting with work through the jaw, neck and shoulders. It may include buccal massage, a technique performed inside the mouth. At Mata Wellbeing in Moonee Ponds, I incorporate these techniques into a personalised treatment that include Reiki, sound healing and breathwork.

If you’ve heard about the Vellora Method and wondered what it actually involves, here’s what I’d want you to know before booking.

How does the Vellora Method work?

The method considers the face as more than skin alone. Facial muscles, fascia and the way we hold tension through the jaw and neck all inform the massage.

During a treatment, I use my hands to work across the face and surrounding areas, adjusting the pressure and pace to suit you. It’s detailed, hands-on work. I pay attention to where you feel comfortable, where you notice tension and how your skin responds.

I particularly like that it encourages practitioners to understand the anatomy behind the movements while staying present with the person receiving them. Those two things belong together.

What is buccal massage?

Buccal massage is an intraoral facial massage technique. Wearing gloves, the practitioner works gently inside the mouth as well as on the outside of the cheeks and jaw. It allows access to some of the muscles involved in facial expression and chewing from a different angle.

It can feel unfamiliar at first, so I explain what to expect and check your comfort throughout. Buccal massage is always optional. It may also need to be skipped or modified if you have certain dental or oral concerns, an infection, or an acute jaw flare.

If you have ongoing jaw pain or suspect a TMJ disorder, it’s best to have that assessed by an appropriate health professional. A facial massage doesn’t replace that care.

Why does a facial include the neck and shoulders?

Think about the last time you realised you were clenching your jaw. Were your shoulders up around your ears too?

Many people notice tension across several of these areas at once. Working through the neck and shoulders can make the facial massage feel more complete and give us space to address the places you notice tightness. There’s no need to assume every line or change in the face is caused by tension, but when tension is present, it makes sense to pay attention to it.

You might feel more relaxed or look temporarily refreshed after a facial massage. Results and experiences vary, and massage won’t permanently reshape your face.

Where do Reiki and sound healing fit?

At Mata Wellbeing, I make room for stillness. The treatment can move from focused sculpting work into quieter moments with Reiki, sound healing and breathwork.

Reiki is a gentle practice involving light touch or stillness, with an emphasis on presence and intention. Its a Japanese practice associated with Mikao Usui, who developed his approach in the early 20th century. It’s based on the idea that gentle touch and focused intention can support a sense of balance and wellbeing. During your facial, I use Reiki to create moments of stillness between the more focused massage techniques, giving you time to rest without feeling you need to do anything at all. You don’t need to believe in anything specific or feel a particular sensation. Some clients find those moments calming; others simply appreciate having nothing to do for a little while.

Sound healing adds another sensory element. The modality uses sound and vibration to create a space for stillness and rest. There is growing research suggesting that music and sound-based practices can help people feel less stressed and anxious. In this treatment, I use sound to help you settle, shift your attention away from the day’s demands and spend a little more time simply being present.

You can listen closely to the sound or let it sit in the background while you rest. I use it to shape the pace and atmosphere of the treatment, alongside touch and breath.

If you prefer less sound, no aromatherapy or a different approach to touch, please tell me. Your comfort matters more than following a set ritual.

What is different about The Vellora Method facial at Mata Wellbeing?

I’ve trained in the Vellora Method and Neolifting, both techniques and teaching that are very uinque and I bring that learning into the style of massage I’ve developed over more than two decades as a skin therapist. I don’t perform an identical sequence on every client. Its intuitive.

One appointment might call for more attention to the jaw, neck and shoulders. Another might move at a gentler pace, with more time for scalp massage, Reiki or sound. We decide what’s appropriate based on your needs, your comfort and what I notice as we work.

For me, that’s the most interesting part of facial massage. The techniques give me a foundation, but the person in front of me shapes the treatment. Learn more about The Vellora Method at Mata Wellbeing here
